Modern homes are increasingly equipped with heated floors. After all, the availability of this heating method increases while maintaining high efficiency. Despite the simplicity of the design of heated floors, they can be called the most optimal option for heating a house or additional heating.

Heated floors can be of two main types by design: water and electric. Let's look at how an electric heated floor works and is connected.

Operating principle of heated electric floors is simple: they convert electrical energy into thermal energy due to the resistance of conductors. At the same time, the screed or tile warms up. It is these materials that are able to evenly distribute heat over the entire area and release it into the environment.

Heated floors powered by electricity have a fairly simple design and consist of the following main parts:

  • heating element (depending on the type, it may be a cable or a mat);
  • temperature sensor;
  • thermostat.

Many people think that installing a heated floor and connecting it to electricity is difficult. In fact, in its essence, this type of heated floor resembles ordinary wiring, which is laid in layers of screed or under tiles. For full operation, a regular outlet with 220 V alternating current is sufficient.

The connection diagram itself does not cause any difficulties - it does not even require special knowledge. But be sure to remember when working that this is an electric current, which, if handled incorrectly, can greatly harm a person, even leading to death. To prevent this from happening, you must strictly follow a number of rules when choosing and connecting.

The most important indicator that you need to focus on when choosing heated floors is their power. This criterion depends on the following points:

  • floor area that needs to be heated;
  • type of heating required (additional or main);
  • type of room where heating will be carried out (balcony, living room, office, warehouse).

The type of connection to the network and the presence of additional elements depend on the power.

When calculating a heated floor, you need to take only the usable area where a person is most often located. So, if this is a kitchen, then you don’t have to calculate the area under the furniture and refrigerator. When making calculations, it is imperative to determine in advance the location of all heating elements, since it will be impossible to change their positions in the future.

If you decide to use underfloor heating as the main heating, then the area allocated for it should be at least 70% of the entire room.

Specific power of heated floors and its calculation

Warm floors can be used both as the main source of heat in the house and as heating. For the first type, the calculation is approximately 150-170 W per 1 sq.m. Heating is calculated based on values ​​of 110-130 W per 1 sq.m.

This indicator may vary slightly depending on the type of heated room. For example, rooms where people are constantly present must have very warm floors, and for this reason the calculated power consumption increases. If this is a kitchen or bathroom, then you can’t overestimate the values ​​here, since residents spend little time in them.

Types of electric heated floors and thermostats

Now there are two types of electric heated floors:

  • cable or sectional;
  • mats, infrared film systems.

Each of these types has its own characteristics and is used in specific cases. So, if a warm floor is installed in a concrete screed, then it is better to use a cable type. Mats or film heating elements are best suited under the tiles.

Naturally, the main part of the heated floor is the heating element. But it works fully thanks to thermostat, which is the heart of the system.

It allows you to maintain the desired surface temperature. Buying a thermostat is not a problem: it can be either mechanical, with manual setting and temperature control, or fully automatic, with measurement of surface temperature, room air and selection of the most optimal parameters.

Connecting the thermostat to the system

Before connecting a heated floor, regardless of its type, you need determine the location of the thermostat. This device is used to maintain a stable set temperature indoors. In addition, the thermostat directly connects the heated floor to the network.

The thermostat is installed at a height of at least 1.5 meters from the floor and in places where it will be completely protected from high temperatures. This will allow you to take measurements as accurately as possible and set the desired floor heating.

Before connecting the thermostat, you first need to decide which method will be used to do this: power from the panel or use of an outlet. It’s worth noting right away that these two methods involve the additional inclusion of a circuit breaker in the circuit, which will trip in the event of a breakdown, overheating or short circuit. Its maximum shutdown power is selected depending on the type of heated floor.

In most cases, the connection diagram is indicated on the thermostat, which greatly simplifies installation without the help of electricians. If there is no diagram, then the following wires need to be connected to the following terminals:

  • 1 terminal – network phase;
  • Terminal 2 – network zero;
  • 3, 4 terminals – heating element cores;
  • Terminal 5 – timer;
  • 6, 7 terminals – floor temperature sensor.

This distribution is standard, but it is worth understanding that different manufacturers may create circuits that require different connections. It all depends on the design and additional capabilities of the system.

Before connecting, you need to cut a small ditch in the wall. It will house two plastic tubes. In the future, the wires of the heating element will be passed into one, and the temperature sensor will be located in the second. Upon completion of these activities, you can begin installing and connecting the entire underfloor heating system.

Connecting a cable-type floor heating system

To connect a cable heated floor, you need to level the surface. Next, attach a damper tape along the wall and then lay thermal insulation. The cable can also be installed on an old surface, without a lining. The only condition for this is the presence of a heated room below. Before laying the cable, you need to stretch all the wires to connect to the thermostat.

Next, you can lay the heating element, having previously placed a regular mounting tape on the floor. This is done to keep the cable in the desired position and not move. The cable can be laid in any shape, the main thing is that it does not intersect with itself. The most effective and convenient installation method is the so-called “snake” - the cables are sold in rolls, already laid in the form of a coil on a mesh.

Having distributed the cable evenly, you can secure it. It is important that the edges do not reach about 10 cm from the location of the furniture or walls. Next, you need to install a temperature sensor, which is hidden in the tube mentioned earlier. Its location should be at a distance of 40-50 cm from the edge of the heating element coil.

This completes the installation of the cable and sensor. Using a tester, you need to check the resistance of the heating element. It must correspond to the passport data. Next, you need to fill everything with screed and wait until it hardens. You cannot immediately turn on the heated floor to dry it, as cracks will appear and the strength indicator will significantly decrease. All that remains is to simply connect all the wires to the thermostat and check the functionality of the system.

Connecting heated floors in mats

To figure out how to connect heated floors in mats, you don’t need to have a lot of knowledge and experience. The basic principle is approximately the same as that of the cable type. It is only worth noting some differences.

A thermal mat is a heat-resistant film onto which a heating element is attached. Since the pitch and shape of the installation are set during production, you will only need to calculate the heated area and power consumption.

When installing such heating, you need to lay out the mats on the surface according to the calculated area. Next, everything is filled with a thin concrete screed or glue is applied for laying tiles. A very important point is lack of thermal insulation. This can lead to system overheating and failure.

If the cold leads are not long enough for connection, just use a piece of mat. The coupling must be located inside the screed itself.

Film-type warm floors are a relatively new invention. It is made of special heating film. Even the most experienced builders may have problems connecting this system. In order to do this without problems, you must definitely understand the film heated floor system itself.

The film heated floor system consists of special carbon and bimetallic heating elements, which are sealed in a special heat-resistant material. Copper contacts are located along the edges of the film. With their help, the device connects to the network.

The actual connection is made by soldering wires to the terminals and leading them to the thermostat. A special feature of the installation is the use of a substrate that has a foil surface. This solution allows heat to be reflected from the lower surface and completely directed to heating the floor.

The temperature sensor is installed, as a rule, in a special recess under the film itself, but options for its location on the surface are not excluded. This type can also be cut according to special marks applied by the manufacturer. They are located at a distance of up to 30 cm from each other. When the installation is completed, the sheets can be connected in parallel.

The main difference between a film heated floor is that it fits under any surface. The only exception is its installation under the carpet, since there is a high probability of damage to the integrity of the film.

The decision to install heated floors in the house has always been justified. It is convenient, practical and quite economical. And if there are children in the house, a warm floor will allow parents not to worry about them freezing and getting sick.

Warm floors can be water or electric. In water heated floors, the heating element is pipes with hot water supplied from the heating system. The power source for electric floors is the same, however, they are distinguished by the heating elements used: cable or film.

The heating element can be:

  • single or double core resistive heating cable;
  • thermal mats;
  • self-regulating cable;
  • heating film (bimetallic or carbon);
  • carbon rods.

Thermostat: purpose, types and methods of connection

The underfloor heating system is controlled via a thermostat. Manufacturers offer two types of thermostats:

  1. Mechanical. The temperature that they want to maintain in the house is set using a mechanical rheostat.
  2. Electronic. They work on the basis of a programming device. There are touch and button ones. The operation of the system through such a thermostat is initiated at a specified time and according to specified temperature indicators.

Thermostats are installed at a height of about 1.5 meters from the floor surface. The location for installing the thermostat must be protected from direct sunlight and any additional heat sources. The thermostat is connected permanently, powered from the electrical panel or through sockets already available in the room.

Typically, the manufacturer draws a connection diagram on the thermostat housing. This allows the home craftsman to connect this device himself.

Regardless of the type, thermostats are designed to control the following types of electrical heating elements:

  • Heating cable. This is a conductor with high resistance. It is placed in reliable insulation. When current passes, the cable heats up.
  • Thermal mat. This device uses the same high-resistance cable, but it is attached to a matte film with a predetermined pitch.
  • Special film, which emits infrared rays. The thickness of such a film is no more than 5 mm. A semiconductor flat heating strip is installed in its layer.

If heated floors are installed in several rooms, then it is more advisable to install thermostats on each heating circuit. This will protect the electrical network from overloads, allow you to use different operating modes for different rooms and turn on the systems independently of each other.

After installing the thermostat, a phase is supplied to the distribution box, and neutral and ground are also connected. It is necessary to make a groove in the wall into which plastic tubes are placed. The power wires of the heating cable are placed in one of them, and the wire from the sensor is placed in the other. The sensor is placed under the final floor covering. After this, you can begin installing and connecting the electric floor.

Cable floor connection

Before installing the cable, the floor is leveled using one of the methods, depending on its type. Before laying the cable, it is necessary to stretch the power wires to the thermostat. Most often, the cable is laid in a snake or snail pattern.

Connecting thermal mats

The principle of connecting thermal mats differs little from the similar process for a cable floor. Let's dwell only on the differences.

A thermal mat is the same cable, but fixed with a certain pitch on a heat-resistant film. This makes installation easier. The film with cable is laid out on the prepared floor base and filled with mortar or tile adhesive. After this, the finishing coating is installed. Thermal insulation is not used for this type of flooring to avoid overheating of the system.

When finished, this design has a thickness of no more than one and a half centimeters. To place the sensor in such a floor, you have to make a depression on the surface.

Sometimes there are not enough so-called cold ends to connect the mats to the thermostat. In this case, a piece of cable is cut out of the mat. The coupling is filled with a screed.

Installation of this type of floor provides significant savings in materials: thermal insulation, screed, fasteners. In addition, the amount of work is significantly reduced. Such a system has practically no restrictions in its use, since it slightly raises the floor surface and can be used in rooms with low ceilings.

Connecting a film floor

The basis of the film floor is carbon or bimetallic heating elements sealed into a heat-resistant film. Along the edge of the heating film there are copper conductors, with the help of which the system is connected to the electrical network.

A foil-coated substrate must be placed under the heating film, which will reflect infrared rays toward the room. In this case, a plastic tube with a sensor is placed in a recess made or attached to the surface of the film.

If necessary, the film can be cut along special lines. On the one hand, the conductive strips are insulated, and on the other, they are left open for connection to wires. The film strips are laid out and connected to each other in parallel.

This warm floor is the most versatile, as it can be installed under any floor covering.

Connecting a water heated floor

The circuit of a water heated floor is slightly different from an electric floor. First of all, you need to determine the connection method.

  • Connection to main heating. This method is used in apartment buildings. However, with such a connection, excessive heat consumption is possible, and you will leave your neighbors' apartments cold. You can avoid such problems in apartments where the heating is on the return line. In this case, you will get a comfortable, not too hot temperature in the underfloor heating pipes. The main disadvantage of this connection method is the inability to smoothly regulate the temperature in the coolant.
  • Connection to an individual heating system. This connection method can only be used in private housing construction. The connection diagram is shown below.

It shows the following circuit elements:

  1. Control valve. This part receives a signal from a sensor installed on the floor surface. Once the system reaches the desired temperature, the valve closes.
  2. Valve balancing device. This device does not allow the coolant to pass freely. If the coolant supply is turned off, the valve releases it in an economical circle, without the boiler.
  3. Circulation pump. This device maintains a certain coolant pressure in the heating circuits.
  4. Safety thermostat. Designed to control the temperature in the system. Installed on the coolant inlet pipe.
  5. Electric drive. Controls the valves of all heating circuits.
  6. The collector distributes the coolant among the circuits.
  7. The bypass (manifold valve) is responsible for circulating water through a small circle of the system.
  8. Thermostat. If necessary, there can be several of them, which allows you to set a certain temperature in each room.
  • Connection via hydraulic separator. A hydraulic separator is a container filled with coolant.

    In underfloor heating control systems, the role of the control unit is played by a thermostat - a device that processes information received from a temperature sensor and, in accordance with a given mode, turns the floor heating on or off.

    With an electric floor heating system, thermostats are required to be installed. Installing a thermostat in a water heated floor system is not necessary. But, if the floor is an additional heating measure, and the coolant temperature at the entrance to the circuit is above 50 degrees, installing a thermostat will solve the problem of room overheating.

    Types of thermostats

    Thermostats for any underfloor heating system can be:

    • programmable, working according to a pre-established, including complex program;
    • without software control.

    Changing modes on non-programmable thermostats is done manually, using a rotary control (mechanical adjustment) or buttons (electronic digital).

    Programmable thermostats are more expensive and more difficult to control, but they can save significant energy resources by turning off floor heating or lowering its temperature at night or during the day when heating is not needed.

    Mechanical non-programmable thermostats are controlled by simply turning the knob to the specified level. Electronic digital - using buttons, touch panel or remote control. The price of non-programmable thermostats is lower due to the extremely simple logical part.

    According to the installation method, thermostats are:

    • built-in - they are installed in a special recess in the wall;
    • overhead - they are attached to the wall using screws or self-tapping screws.

    The choice of installation type is a matter of taste, but it does not affect functionality.

    Temperature sensors

    The sensors are a thermocouple made of two wires that changes the resistance of the circuit when heated. The wires are connected to the corresponding terminals of the thermostat. Sensors are:

    Remote sensors are divided into floor or air temperature sensors. The first ones are installed simultaneously with the laying of the heating elements directly under the finishing coating, the second ones - in a place convenient for measuring the air temperature. Built-in sensors are located right inside the thermostat. Some thermostat models have both types of sensors.

    In the bathroom and kitchen, it is better to install thermostats with a floor temperature sensor - the air in these rooms can be heated by the stove or hot water, but the floor will remain cold.

    Electric heated floors are made using a high-resistance heating cable or infrared film. They are laid on a specially prepared base, after which the floor is screeded and the finishing coating is laid.

    Thermostat connection technology:

    1. Before installing the floor, it is necessary to determine the location where the thermostat will be located and plan its connection to the electrical network. To connect the thermostat, a voltage of 220 V AC is required, that is, you can connect it to a regular outlet or to a separate cable through a circuit breaker.
    2. When laying the floor, choose a location for the temperature sensor. It should be located near the thermostat, on an area of ​​the floor free from furniture.
    1. For infrared floors, the sensor is placed on the reverse side of the film and connected to the wires going to the thermostat.
    2. For cable heated floors poured with concrete screed, the sensor must be placed in a metal corrugated pipe, insulating it from concrete. This measure is necessary for easy removal and replacement of the sensor in the event of its failure. A sensor embedded in concrete cannot be easily removed. The pipe is led to the wall on which the thermostat is installed.
    3. After laying the floor, begin installing the regulator. In the selected location, prepare a recess in the wall according to the dimensions of the built-in thermostat housing or make markings for attaching the overhead thermostat. Remove the front panel and secure the regulator in place.
    4. Compare the permissible switching power of the thermostat contacts with the power of the heating cable or infrared floor. If it is less, additionally install a magnetic starter with a coil rating

    220V. In this case, the heating cable circuit is connected to a 220 V power supply through the contacts of the magnetic starter, and the starter coil circuit is connected to the output from the thermostat.

  • If the switching power of the thermostat contacts is sufficient, then the heating cable is connected directly to the output from the thermostat.
  • Connect the sensor circuit to the terminals specified in the passport or instructions.
  • Connect the 220 V power supply to the appropriate terminals: they are usually designated as L or F - phase and N - zero. Phasing must be observed. You can determine it by the color of the wire: if the cable is new and laid according to the rules, then the phase wire has black, brown or white insulation, and the neutral wire has blue insulation. If you connect the thermostat to a common outlet, the phase is found using a voltage indicator or an indicator screwdriver.
    • Check the functionality of the thermostat:
    • 220 V power supply;
    • Set the minimum temperature value on the thermostat;
    • Turn on the floor heating with a toggle switch;
    • Change the temperature mode to maximum by turning the knob or using buttons - a click should be heard, notifying that the heating circuit is closed.

    Thermostats for water floor heating systems are a device for controlling a servo drive that regulates the flow of coolant into the heating circuit. They can be either electronically or manually controlled, while such control systems usually use sensors for measuring air temperature rather than floor temperature, due to the high inertia of heating.

    1. The sensor is installed at a height of approximately 100-120 cm above the floor level on the wall, possibly next to the thermostat. The wall should not be subjected to additional heating from heating radiators.
    2. Install the power supply circuits of the thermostat and the sensor circuits.
    3. If a thermostat with electrical connection with a servo drive is used, lay a cable to its control circuits.
    4. When using a radio-controlled controller, adjust it.
    5. The operation of the control system is checked using an external thermometer: the desired mode is set on the regulator and the temperature is measured at the location where the sensor is installed for several hours. The temperature should not fluctuate significantly.

    • The two-core cable is connected to the same contacts, but according to a different circuit. Three wires come out of its end, where brown is phase, blue is zero, green is ground. They are connected in sequential order to each socket.

    Unlike water floors, which are rather cumbersome to install, electric models are suitable for any room. There are practically no restrictions on their use. Under no circumstances should you use thermal insulation with such a connection, because this can lead to overall overheating of the system.

    If there are not enough “cold ends” to connect the heated floor to the thermostat, then it is permissible to cut a short length of cable from the mat. The coupling will be located in the screed itself.

    Thermal mat is a type of cable, and therefore the installation procedure for both systems is similar. The difference is that heating mats are easier to connect and much faster.

    The absence of the need for thermal insulation and a small amount of screed make such a heated floor more profitable, and the overall price of a heated floor will be much lower, thanks to savings on materials and installation work. A big plus is the ability to install the system in rooms with low ceilings, and such a connection diagram for an electric heated floor is no more complicated than other types of floor heating.

    Film floor installation

    A fairly new model on the heating systems market is film heated floors. To have an idea of ​​how film heated floors work, you need to understand the features of its design. The system itself consists of heating parts (bimetallic or carbon), which are sealed in a heat-resistant material. The edges of the film have copper conductors that connect to the electrical network.

    The connection of a film-type heated floor is carried out according to the same scheme as the installation of heating mats. The difference lies in the laying of a special substrate, which is laid out over the entire surface that requires insulation. Typically, the substrate is any material covered with foil film, which reflects infrared rays, directing them into the room. The connection diagram of the regulator does not change, leaving the design of the heated floor still understandable even to beginners.

    The film can be cut, but only along the lines specified by the manufacturer; they are placed on the surface of the film and have an interval of 20 to 30 cm. The conductive strips are insulated along one of the edges, while the other remains open, which is what is connected to the wires.

    Pieces of film are placed and connected in parallel to each other. At the end of the work, one wire is connected to the adjacent sheet, and with the help of the second, the heated floor is connected to the thermostat.

    Film flooring is universal in that it is compatible with most coatings. Laminate is most suitable for a film system, but carpet will be the most unsuitable due to the increased pressure on the film.
