Digging for the past

A. A group of university students from Brazil have been given the job of discovering and locating all the waterfalls in their country. It is not easy because very often the maps are not detailed. The students have to remain in water for long periods of time. Every day they cover a distance of 35 to 40 kilometers through the jungle, each carrying 40 kilos of equipment.

B. For many years now, mail-order shopping has served the needs of a certain kind of customers. Everything they order from a catalogue is delivered to their door. Now, though, e-mail shopping on the Internet has opened up even more opportunities for this kind of shopping.

C. Another generation of computer fans has arrived. They are neither spotty schoolchildren nor intellectual professors, but pensioners who are learning computing with much enthusiasm. It is particularly interesting for people suffering from arthritis as computers offer a way of writing nice clear letters. Now pensioners have discovered the Internet and at the moment they make up the fastest growing membership.

D. Shopping centres are full of all kinds of stores. They are like small, selfcontained towns where you can find everything you want. In a large centre, shoppers can find everything they need without having to go anywhere else. They can leave their cars in the shopping centre car park and buy everything in a covered complex, protected from the heat, cold or rain.

E. Not many people know that, back in the fifties, computers were very big, and also very slow. They took up complete floors of a building, and were less powerful, and much slower than any of today’s compact portable computers. At first, the data they had to process and record was fed in on punched-out paper; later magnetic tape was used, but both systems were completely inconvenient.

F. Potholing is a dull name for a most interesting and adventurous sport. Deep underground, on the tracks of primitive men and strange animals who have

adapted to life without light, finding unusual landscapes and underground lakes, the potholer lives an exciting adventure. You mustn’t forget, though, that it can be quite dangerous. Without the proper equipment you can fall, get injured or lost.

G. Substantial remains of an octagonal Roman bath house, probably reused as a Christian baptistry, have been uncovered during a student training excavation near Faversham in Kent. The central cold plunge pool was five metres across, and stood within a structure which also had underfloor heating and hot pools, probably originally under a domed roof.

It is far from the glare of city lights, it doesn’t have to look through the air, D _______________________.

Hubble has snapped photos of storms on Saturn and exploding stars. Hubble doesn’t just focus on our solar system. It also peers into our galaxy and beyond. Many Hubble photos show the stars that make up the Milky Way galaxy. A galaxy is a city of stars.

Hubble cannot take pictures of the sun or other very bright objects, because doing so could “fry” the telescope’s instruments, but it can detect infrared and ultra violet light F _______________________.

The Slob’s Holiday

My husband and I went to Reno for our holiday last year. “Isn’t that place where people go to get a quickie divorce?” asked my second son? ‘Yes’, I said, trying to look enigmatic and interesting. ‘You are not getting divorced, are you?’ he asked bluntly. ‘No,’ I said, ’we are going to an outdoor pursuit trade fair. The children sighed with relief and slouched away, muttering things like ‘boring’. I call them children, but they are all grown up. My eldest son has started to develop fine lines around his eyes – fledgling crow’s feet. A terrible sight for any parent to see. Anyway, the piece isn’t about children. It’s about holidays.

The first thing to be said about holidays is that anybody who can afford one should be grateful. The second thing is that planning holidays can be hard work. In our household it starts with somebody muttering, ’I suppose we ought to think about a holiday.’ This remark is usually made in July and is received glumly, as if the person making it has said ‘I suppose we ought to think about the Bolivian balance of payment problems.’

Nothing much happens for a week and then the potential holiday-makers are rounded up and made to consult their diaries. Hospital appointments are taken into consideration, as are important things to do with work. But other highlights on the domestic calendar, such as the cat’s birthday, are swept aside and eventually two weeks are found. The next decision is the most painful: where?

We travel abroad to work quite a lot but we return tired and weary, so the holiday we are planning is a slob’s holiday: collapse on a sunbed, read a book until the sun goes down, stagger back to hotel room, shower, change into glad rags, eat well, wave good-bye to teenagers, have a last drink on hotel terrace, go to bed and then lie awake and wait for hotel waiters to bring the teenagers from the disco.

I never want to be guided around another monument, as long as I live. I do not want to be told how many bricks it took to build it. I have a short attention span for such details. I do not want to attend a ‘folk evening’ ever, ever again. The kind where men with their trousers tucked into their socks wave handkerchiefs in the direction of women wearing puff-sleeved blouses, long skirts and headscarves.

I also want to live dangerously and get brown. I want my doughy English skin change from white sliced to wheat germ. I like the simple pleasure of removing my watch strap and gazing at the patch of virgin skin beneath.

I don’t want to make new friends – on holidays or in general; I can’t manage the ones I have at home. I do not want to mix with the locals and I have no

wish to go into their homes. I do not welcome tourists who come to Leicester

into my home. Why should the poor locals in Holidayland be expected to? It’s

bad enough that we monopolize their beaches, clog their pavements and spend

an hour in a shop choosing a sunhat that costs the equivalent of 75 pence.

So, the slob’s holiday has several essential requirements: a hotel on a

sunny beach, good food, a warm sea, nightlife for the teenagers, a big crowd to

get lost in, and the absence of mosquitoes.

As I write, we are at the planning stage. We have looked through all the

holiday brochures, but they are full of references to ‘hospitable locals’, ‘folk

nights’, ‘deserted beaches’, and ‘interesting historical sights’. Not our cup of

tea, or glass of sangria, at all.

The parents’ choice of holiday destination made the narrator’s children feel

A19 The slob’s holiday is the type of holiday for people, who

1) do not want to go on holiday abroad.

2) go on holiday with teenagers.

3) do not like public life.

4) prefer peaceful relaxing holidays.

A20 When the narrator says ‘I also want to live dangerously’, she means

1) getting lost in the crowd.

2) going sightseeing without a guide.

3) choosing herself the parties to go to.

4) lying long hours in the sun on the beach.

A21 The main reason the narrator doesn’t want to mix up with locals is because she

1) doesn’t let tourists to her house at Leicester.

2) doesn’t want to add to their inconveniencies.

3) is afraid to make friends with local people.

4) values her own privacy above all.

Now we are ready to start.

I love reading. I read detective and spy stories, novels, and romantic and fantasy stories. If I’m stuck on a train or waiting for something and don’t have anything to read, I feel terrible. So something that I spend a lot of money on would probably be books. I always buy a lot of books, magazines and reader’s digests. And I keep all of them at home – my mum says it’s horrible. Also lots of my money goes on audio books. I always share them with friends. Em … it’s kind of an exchange.

Oh, you know, shiny things really attract me. Every time I have some extra money, I buy bracelets, rings, earrings or necklaces. I wear them everywhere and every day. If I’m shopping somewhere and there is something flashy shining at me, I usually stop and look and very often a salesperson can talk me into buying it. It’s crazy I know. I also love buying books but I don’t spend so much on them.

Ah, I spend money mostly on um … going out, like going to restaurants or clubs, and things like that. I am a party person, I love hanging out with friends. I don’t actually buy a lot of things, like electronics, books or CDs. I just spend money on going out with my friends, on food and drinks for parties. I really love chatting, dancing and making jokes.

Something I probably spend too much on is clothes. I guess because I am a girl, I think of shopping as a fun pastime and I find it relaxing. Actually I call it “shopping therapy” to go and buy some new clothes. I often go alone – I don’t need anyone to advise me. I’d say I love the process of choosing and buying things. It really makes me feel good.

If I had the money I wanted, I would like to go and spend two weeks at every famous place on Earth. I love traveling in comfort. Nowadays it’s very expensive. I read travel magazines and surf the Internet for information about different tours, hotels and sights – and now I know how I want to travel. That’s what I’d spend my money on if I could.

I usually don’t spend that much money on anything like jewellery or clothes. But then if there is one big expense, it is food. I like desserts, especially ice cream, so when I go out for dinner I definitely have a dessert afterwards. I can’t live without cakes, candies, chocolates and things like that. Who can?

You have 15 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 15 seconds.) Now you will hear the texts again. (Repeat.)

This is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds to check your answers. (Pause 15 seconds.)

Receptionist : Well, first of all, the purpose of our program is to provide language learning opportunities for students who would like to master basic language skills, let"s say, for his or her job, or to study intensively to enter a US college or university.

1. For information and urgent help

2. World without buttons

3. To monitor and treat the disease

4. A built-in charger

5. Key under your skin

6. Big brother is watching you

7. Disadvantages of tech

8. Phone always on you

A. Sure, we’re virtually connected to our phones 24/7 now, but what if we could be literally plugged in to our phones? That’s already starting to happen. Last year, for instance, artist Anthony Antonellis had a chip put in his arm that could store and transfer data to his handheld smartphone. And researchers are already experimenting with sensors that turn human bone into living speakers.

B. In the future patients will be able to use implantable technologies to diagnose and even treat diseases. Scientists in London are developing swallowable capsule-sized chip that will control fat levels in obese patients and generate genetic material that makes them feel “full”. It has potential as an alternative to surgery to handle obesity. Also it can monitor blood-sugar levels for diabetics.

C. The U.S. military has programs to identify any person using face scanning device. Some people see it as a doubtless advantage: improved crime fighting, secure elections and never a lost child again. However, such technologies can hammer against social norms and raise privacy issues. And one day there might be a computer to see all, know all and control all.

D. One of the challenges for implantable tech is delivering power to devices which are inside human bodies. You can’t plug them in as you do with your phone or computer. You can’t easily take them out to replace a battery. A team in Cambridge is working on specific bio batteries that can generate power inside the body, transfer it wirelessly where needed, and then simply melt away.

E. Soon tattoos will not only make you look cool but will be able to perform useful tasks, like opening your car or entering smartphone codes with a fingerpoint. Researchers have made an implantable skin fibers thinner than a human hair. Scientists are working on the chip that can be put inside a finger through a tattoo-like process, letting you unlock things or enter codes simply by pointing.

F. The British research team is developing pills with microprocessors in them that can text to hospitals directly from inside your body. The pills can share inside info to help doctors know if you are taking your medication properly and if it is having the desired effect. Moreover, in case of emergency, it can send a signal to the computer and the ambulance will come straight away.

G. Lately touchscreens are everywhere – from computers, phones, tablets to car systems and vending machines. Even doorbells now include touch screen controls. One has to wonder: are we moving to a world of only touchscreen devices? And the answer is probably yes. We are coming to an age where every flat or even curved surface could be made a touchscreen and we can operate from it.

Driverless cars

Which of the following statements is TRUE, according to the text?

1) A driverless car operator won’t be responsible for accidents.

2) The age required to operate a driverless car is likely to rise.

3) Driverless cars may increase the number of road accidents.

4) The driverless cars will be voice-activated.

Driverless cars

Driverless cars are expected to be rolling into the streets within the next 20 years. In fact, they’ve legally been on the roads for the past years, approved for testing purposes. It is predicted that driverless vehicles will be commercially available at a high cost within 7 years, but it may take another 8 years for prices to drop enough to spur mass consumption.

Today, the discussions focus primarily on the shifting of accident liability to manufacturers and all the goodness that comes along with reducing accidents. A truly driverless road would not be accident-free as there would still be a number of accidents caused by mechanical or computer errors, weather conditions, pedestrians and sheer random chance. But it would make the now-routine loss of life on the roads far rarer.

The concept of a “driver” will be replaced with that of an “operator”, who simply programs the vehicle’s GPS to arrive at the desired destination and pushes the “Start” button to begin the trip. Since judgment will no longer be required of the operator, they won’t need a driver’s license. Theoretically, a 10-year-old child could independently take the car to school in the morning.

Computer-operated cars will eventually reshape the car design as things like windshields will become less necessary. Drivers will be able to sit wherever they’d like in their cars. There will be no need for gas and brake pedals as speed will be automatically controlled by the computer. The steering wheel and the turn signal arm can also be eliminated once the public gets used to reliability of these vehicles.

Each passenger will have a personal video display informing about a current location, the distance to your destination, speed and personal entertainment selections. The concept of ‘distracted driving’ will disappear as there will be no reason to pay attention to where you are going.

Vehicle owners will no longer buy collision insurance since manufacturers will be solely responsible for damage. Owners will only need theft insurance and coverage for hail, falling objects or floods. To take this one step further, personal vehicle ownership may dramatically diminish. Car dealers will have lots full of vehicles for hire on a daily or hourly basis instead of vehicles for sale. When you need a car, you’ll summon one using your mobile phone. The closest unmanned vehicle will be dispatched to your home to take you where you need to go. When done, you’ll simply push the button for the unmanned vehicle to drive itself back to the rental lot.

The social and cultural impact of driverless cars could cause far more upheaval than any of us could imagine. Perhaps, it would be even greater than the impact the Internet had on commerce and communication. Obviously, the picture being painted is the one that assumes total adoption, which is far from realistic. You will always have transitional delays caused by the lack of free cars, the longevity of today’s vehicles and cultural resistance.

This resembles the historical factors that affected the transition from horse to the automobile. At the moment, the driverless car seems like a novelty. However, it will open up new prospects. The prospect of flying cars may soon become a reality. With computer-controlled vehicles that strictly follow traffic rules, threedimensional roads become far less scary and more a matter of simply solving the technological challenge.

Where we’re going, we may not need roads at all.

The first maps were drawn by explorers to help them find their way home and show people where they had been. The maps showed the shape of the land, distances between places and special features such as caves and old trees. Nowadays, maps show the towns and villages, and the roads, railways, rivers and mountains. Symbols are used to show all the different things on a map and there is a key to explain what the symbols stand for.

Over the centuries, people explored most of the Earth and put together the map of the world we use today. Maps of the world or large areas are often either “political” or “physical”. The political map shows territorial borders. The purpose of the physical map is to show features of geography such as mountains, soil type or land use including roads, railroads and buildings.

The mystery of why trees don’t stop growing is still unsolved. Human beings usually stop growing sometime during their teens. Many animals reach full growth within a year. Others are fully grown in just a few years. Birds and insects also stop growing at a certain age. But trees keep growing as long as they live.

Trees live, grow, and reproduce themselves by an amazing process. The thousands of leaves put forth by the tree breathe for it and manufacture its food. Its root system gathers minerals and vast quantities of water. To carry this water to the leaves, the tree is equipped with an intricate circulation system that extends upward from the millions of root hairs through the trunk and branches. The trunk holds the leaves up to the sunlight, sends them water from the roots, and gets food back from them. Then seeds are borne in flowers or cones.

  • where and when the photo was taken
  • what/who is in the photo
  • what is happening
  • why you keep the photo in your album
  • why you decided to show the picture to your friend

1 Where and when the photo was taken (было When you took the photo) — это значит, что при выполнении этого задания теперь не имеет значения, кто сделал фото (вы, ваши друзья или родственники), то есть по словам Вербицкой М. В. «Кто угодно мог сделать эту фотографию» (смотрите вебинар Вербицкой М.В. «Технологии подготовки к ОГЭ и ЕГЭ»)
  • пункт 4 Why you keep this photo in your album (было Why you took this photo)

You have to talk continuously, starting with:

"I’ve chosen photo number… "

Sample answer

I"ve chosen photo number 1.

I should say that my family means a lot to me because they are people I can always rely on.

I took this photo two months ago when my parents and I went to Voronezh to visit my elder brother’s family. Recently they have moved into a new flat and invited us to a house-warming party. I always enjoy our trips to Voronezh and think it is a very nice place to live in.

You can see my brother Max, his wife Julia and their daughter Stacy. They are sitting on a comfortable white sofa in the living room. Stacy is sitting on her mother’s lap. They are smiling and seem to be very happy because at last their dream came true. I should say that Max loves his daughter and wife very much and always takes care of them.

There is a white bookcase with open shelves. I like their decision to furnish the room in white colour because it makes the room look wider. As my brother works as a journalist for a local newspaper you can see a lot of books and magazines on the shelves.

My brother lives quite far from our hometown and we can’t see each other very often. So, I always take pictures of him and his family to recollect the moments we spent together . Moreover, I used this photo for my school project called “My Family Tree”. That"s why I keep this photo in my album.

I decided to show this photo to you because you have never seen my niece Stacy who is a very cute and bright girl before.

That’s all I wanted to say.

Sample answer

I"ve chosen photo number 3 . (Обязательно начните ответ с этой фразы, предварительно выбрав номер фотографии).

You know, I’ve got a lot of pictures connected with New Year and Christmas celebrations in my album, but this one is special because our friends from Germany, Hilda and Otto, sent it for us.

It was taken on the 25 th of December in their home in Dresden.

Of course, you can’t see Hilda because she was trying to capture this wonderful moment and I think she did her best.

In the foreground of the picture you can see her husband Otto and her daughter Greta . They are both in a festive mood, smiling at each other. Greta is wearing a lovely red dress which is a traditional colour of Christmas. Her hair is nicely done in curls. She is carrying a Christmas present which, she believes, was brought by Santa Claus. The father and the daughter look very happy.

In the background of the picture there is a decorated Christmas tree.

Hilda’s hobby is photography and she used some special effects such as falling snow in the picture that’s why it looks so magic.

I keep this photo in my album because it’s a kind of “Hello” and a Christmas greeting from our friends from abroad. (I keep this photo in my album because it reminds me of the joy of holiday seasons.)

I decided to show this picture to you because you are interested in photography too and you might also want to use these effects in your photos. So, I hope you enjoyed watching it.

That’s all I wanted to say.

Task 4. Study the two photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:

  • give a brief description of the photos (action, location)
  • say what the pictures have in common
  • say in what way the pictures are different
  • say which of the activities presented in the pictures you’d prefer
  • explain why

Now I will compare and contrast these two photos.

I would like to point out right from the beginning that hobbies make our life more exciting. And these two photos prove that.

I think that the theme which relates these photos is the way people spend their free time.

Let me start with the first picture which shows a young girl who is in the kitchen at the moment. It looks as if she is going to cook a vegetarian dish because on the left side of the picture you can see a lot of fresh vegetables. I get the impression that the girl leads a healthy life style as she looks very slim and sporty. Although she is wearing shorts and a top, it is not clear from the picture what season of the year it is.

As for the second picture it also shows a young girlwho is enjoying snowboarding in her free time. She is wearing goggles, mittens, and special sports clothing that may protect her from the strong wind when she slides down the hill. Unfortunately , I can’t see her wearing a helmet which might be dangerous . It seems to me she feels excited and looks very confident balancing her snowboard.

As I’ve already mentioned both photos depict people’s hobbies. The main similarity between photo 1 and photo 2 is that they show young girls who are practically of the same age. Both girls keep fit and seem to be in a good mood enjoying their leisure time.

The most obvious difference between these pictures is kinds of hobbies which are cooking and snowboarding . Moreover, the girl in photo 1 is wearing summer clothes and is depicted indoors, while the girl in photo 2 is wearing warm clothes and is shown outdoors. To my mind she is taking a risk going snowboarding.
